The darkness - and the turning of the light-tide
Alpine climbing days begin in the dead of night. 3am. 2am. My earliest ever in the Alps was 1.30. (In the Himalaya it was 10pm.) There’s darkness to contend with, obviously. There’s (often bitter) cold: the purpose of starting early is that everything should be frozen
